This report presents the lidar speed-measuring device performance specifications developed by the National Highway Safety Administration (NTSA).
Abstract
The specifications represent the minimum performance requirements and verification procedures and should be used as a baseline when developing purchasing criteria. The goal of presenting the specifications is to assist law enforcement administrators assess the accuracy and reliability of lidar devices they may consider purchasing. The specifications are applicable to laser speed-measuring devices used by law enforcement to detect vehicle speed violations. The specifications define requirements for manufacturer provided equipment, product information, and labeling; range accuracy; beam characteristics; environmental extremes; supply voltage tolerance; speed display; speed accuracy; auxiliary-equipment interface; low supply voltage indicator; conducted electromagnetic interference; radiated electromagnetic interference; and vehicle determination. The standard test conditions, test equipment, and test procedures are described. Manufacturers are encouraged to develop and produce lidar speed-measuring devices that meet or exceed these minimum specifications. Appendixes, table, figures
