A REVIEW OF SPOKANE, WASH., POLICE DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES IN 1979 IS PRESENTED THROUGH NARRATIVE AND TABULAR AND GRAPHIC INFORMATION IN THIS ANNUAL REPORT.
Abstract
DUTIES PERFORMED AND DATA COLLECTED FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING POLICE DIVISIONS ARE SUPPLIED: UNIFORM DIVISION (PATROL, TRAFFIC, CRIME ANALYSIS), INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION (DETECTIVE BUREAU, YOUNG PEOPLE'S BUREAU), ADMINISTRATIVE VICE/INTELLIGENCE/NARCOTICS UNIT, POLICE ACADEMY, PLANNING AND RESEARCH OFFICE, CRIME PREVENTION OFFICE, COMMUNITY RELATIONS OFFICE, AND THE POLICE RESERVE. IN ADDITION, THE SERVICES DIVISION IS DESCRIBED WITH INFORMATION ON ITS WARRANT SYSTEM, 'INLAND EMPIRE POLICE INFORMATION NETWORK,' PROPERTY SECTION, AND PHOTOGRAPHIC SECTION. INFORMATION IS ALSO REPORTED ON THE COSTS OF CRIME, THE AGE AND RACE OF ADULTS AND JUVENILES ARRESTED, AND THE VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN. A COMPARISON OF TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS AND ACCIDENT INFORMATION BETWEEN 1978 AND 1979 IS ALSO PRESENTED. OVERALL, SPOKANE HAD A 25 PERCENT INCREASE IN REPORTED INCIDENTS OF MAJOR CRIME IN 1979 TO A TOTAL OF 15,685, THE HIGHEST IN THE CITY'S HISTORY. REPORTED INCIDENTS OF FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT INCREASED IN 1979, WHEREAS REPORTS OF MURDER AND NONNEGLIGENT HOMICIDE DECREASED SLIGHTLY. A GRAPH ILLUSTRATES RADIO CALLS MADE BY MONTH, AND TABLES SHOW THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMISSIONED AND CIVILIAN PERSONNEL AND THE CITY'S POLICE BUDGET: A MAP OF SPOKANE IS INCLUDED. (WJR)
