Body armor is an effective way to reduce the severity of police officer injuries from bullets; police agencies should consider several factors when selecting body armor.
Abstract
The most recent body armor standard, which was set by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in 1987, caused extensive controversy. However, a 1992 report and recommendations from the Office of Technology Assessment and the creation of the National Armor Advisory Board have resolved many of the criticisms of the NIJ standard. Most manufacturers now recommend that police agencies purchase only NIJ-certified body armor. Factors to consider in choosing body armor are the realistic threat level, including the threat posed by the police officer's own weapon and ammunition, comfort, armor style, price, service, delivery, and the reliability of the company. NIJ offers a model procurement package. Police administrators must also be aware that a company's product liability insurance does not affect or help the department. Finally, a higher wear rate by police managers will contribute to a higher wear rate and greater safety among front-line police officers. Photographs, list of reports discussing technical aspects of body armor, and list of manufacturers.
