This article describes the facility and operations of the St. Louis County Justice Center (Missouri), as well as its transition plan for moving into a new facility.
Abstract
The Justice Center is scheduled for completion in June 1997. Inmates will move in 3 months after completion. This 503,000- square-foot high-rise facility will house a jail with a capacity of 1,232 beds and will be operated as a direct supervision institution. The facility will also house an Intake Service, Center, a Correctional Health Center, two courtrooms, and several floors of office space for the jail administration, prosecuting attorney, and public defender. It is projected that approximately 8,000 persons will be processed into the current St. Louis County Jail, Adult Correctional Institution, Adult Correctional Institution-Annex, and the Work Release Center in 1995. Current programs include the Substance Abuse Traffic Offenders Program, Alcohol/Drug Education Program, Alternative Community Services Program, and Probation Supervision Unit. This article also discusses jail personnel training and the work of the transition team.
