Abstract
The Division of Criminal Investigation within the St. Louis County Police Department serves over 1 million county residents and 64 police departments with its staff of 72 investigators. Before the Word Processing Center was installed, investigators were spending about 28 percent of their time completing investigative reports. Since the center began operations in 1979, investigators have reduced the time spent writing and typing reports by 53 percent and have had more time available for investigations. The article describes the goals of the center, the implementation process, additional program achievements such as improved report quality, and financing methods. In addition, further application of word processing to other department divisions is described. This includes the production of form letters, secretarial and clerical staff organization, and the receipt of all police reports (possibly telephonically recorded at the center Footnotes are included.
