RESULTS OF A STUDY ON THE NATION'S MOST WIDELY PUBLICIZED DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM TO ASSESS ITS IMPACT AND TO PROVIDE A BASE FROM WHICH TO SPECULATE ON THE REPLACEMENT OF CRIMINAL LAWS WITH CIVIL DETOXIFICATION SYSTEMS.
Abstract
THE DETOXIFICATION CONCEPT IS DISCUSSED AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE ST LOUIS CENTER ANALYZED. THE IMPACT OF THE ST LOUIS CENTER ON POLICE PRACTICES THERE IS EXAMINED AND ITS SUCCESS IN TERMS OF REHABILITATION AND REDUCTION IN PUBLIC COSTS AS COMPARED TO PROCESSING THROUGH THE CRIMINAL PROCESS IS DETERMINED. OBSERVATIONS ON PROBLEMS WITH INCONCLUSIVE DATA AND DIFFICULTIES WITH POLICE ACCEPTANCE OF THE PROGRAM ARE INCLUDED.
