A BREAKDOWN OF CRIMES BY TYPE OF OFFENSE AND OFFENDER IS SHOWN IN THIS ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE ST. LOUIS METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
TABLES RECORD THE NUMBER OF INDEX CRIMES BY MONTH, BY POLICE DISTRICT, AND THOSE CLEARED BY ARREST; PERSONS ARRESTED FOR PART I AND PART II OFFENSES BY AGE AND SEX; JUVENILES ARRESTED BY POLICE DISTRICT; PERSONS ARRESTED FOR CERTAIN OFFENSES BY RACE AND SEX; AUTO THEFTS AND RECOVERIES; COMPLAINTS AGAINST POLICE OFFICERS; AND TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT, ACCIDENTS, AND FATALITIES. THE DISTRIBUTION OF PLANTS AND EQUIPMENT AND OF COMMISSIONED PERSONNEL BY RANK ARE SHOWN, AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF POLICE OFFICERS, TOTAL FLEET MILEAGE, AND TOTAL RADIO CALLS. THE NUMBERS AND SALARIES OF CIVILIAN PERSONNEL ARE ILLUSTRATED, AND AN ORGANIZATIONAL CHARTS AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ARE INCLUDED. THESE TABLES SHOW THAT CRIME DECREASED SIGNIFICANTLY DURING THE FIRST HALF OF 1978 AND INCREASED THE SECOND HALF, BREAKING A 7-YEAR DOWNWARD TREND. ALL INDEX CRIMES EXCEPT LARCENY AND AUTO THEFT SHOWED INCREASES OVER THE COMPARABLE PERIOD OF 1977. IN THE FIRST 5 MONTHS OF 1979, THIS INCREASE INCLUDED ALL OFFENSES. HIGHLIGHTS ARE PRESENTED OF POLICE EFFORTS FOR GREATER CITIZEN COOPERATION AND BUDGET TIGHTENING WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT, AS WELL AS DISCUSSIONS OF FUTURE TRENDS IN CRIME, SOCIAL PROBLEMS, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT.
