These standards for the accreditation of juvenile training schools encompass all phases of institutional operation.
Abstract
The standards are based on the general principle that the treatment of juveniles in a training school should be fair, just, and humane. Further, the program should be designed to return the juvenile to the community in the shortest time possible. The environment should be conducive to the juvenile's positive development without compromising public safety. Programs should emphasize basic social skills, education, recreation, and the development of job skills. The standards specify criteria for implementing these general principles in various areas of institutional operations. Standards pertaining to institutional operations include administration, organization, and management; fiscal management; personnel; training and staff development; management information and research; records; physical plant; and safety and emergency procedures. Other standards categories are food service, sanitation and hygiene, medical and health services, juvenile rights, rules and discipline, and programs and services. Standards also cover reception, classification, release and revocation, and volunteer involvement. A glossary, subject index, and the American Correctional Association Code of Ethics.
