Abstract
The voluntary accreditation program for law enforcement agencies is a joint effort of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., and four major law enforcement executive membership associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs’ Association and Police Executive Research Forum. The manual contains 436 standards organized into 40 chapters, or topic areas. The standards’ requirements describe what must be accomplished by the applicant agency but allow that agency wide latitude in determining how it will achieve compliance with each applicable standard. The major subjects include: (1) Law Enforcement Role, Responsibilities, and Relationships; (2) Organization, Management, and Administration; (3) Fiscal Management and Agency-Owned Property; (4) Personnel Structure; (5) Personnel Process; (6) Law Enforcement Operations; (7) Operations Support; (8) Traffic Operations; (9) Prisoner and Court-Related Activities; and (10) Auxiliary and Technical Services.
