This edition of the American Correctional Association's Standards Supplement contains information on the purpose and intent of corrections standards and program goals and activities.
Abstract
The performance-based standards are designed to achieve three results: (1) motivate correctional agencies to become more involved with accreditation; (2) enhance correctional programming; and (3) help corrections professionals assess the effectiveness of corrections. Standards for adult corrections focus on the administration of correctional agencies, community residential services, boot camp programs, correctional institutions, local detention facilities, parole authorities, and probation and parole field services. Standards for juvenile corrections concern community residential facilities, boot camp programs, day treatment programs, detention facilities, probation and aftercare services, and training schools. The standards also cover correctional training academies, electronic monitoring, and small jail facilities. Appendixes contain guidelines for correctional institution security levels, a definition of qualified individuals for safety and sanitation inspections, and guidelines for the control and use of toxic substances.
