Abstract
This guidebook from the National Center for Transgender Equality presents information on ending abuse and imprisonment of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) prisoners. The guidebook is intended for use by advocates for the LGBT community to work with local and State corrections or detention agencies to develop and implement more just and humane policies towards LGBT individuals. The main chapters of this guidebook cover the following: understanding the basics of the problem and the different types of confinement facilities that house LGBT persons; working with jails and other facilities on LGBT policies; key topics and considerations for LGBT jail policies; addressing common concerns, fears, and objectives of LGBT persons; and combating the incarceration of LGBT people. The key topics covered include developing non-discrimination statements, developing intake and identification procedures and risk assessments, developing procedures for meeting additional safety and privacy needs of transgender individuals, providing medical and mental health care to LGBT persons, and developing a set of staff and volunteer training requirements. 4 appendixes
