This document provides information on crimes committed in the State of Arkansas during the period January-December 1996.
Abstract
Slightly more than 118,000 index crimes were reported to law enforcement agencies throughout Arkansas during the year, an increase of 1 percent compared to the previous year. Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) decreased 4 percent compared to 1995, although rape showed an increase of 13 percent. Property crime (burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson) increased 2 percent, with the number of thefts alone increasing by 5 percent. Total arrests increased 4 percent. Arrests for violent crimes increased 1 percent. Driving under the influence arrests decreased 3 percent and arrests for weapon possession decreased 16 percent. The largest increases were for drug arrests; a 7-percent increase overall, with sales of marijuana arrests up 14 percent, marijuana possession arrests up 17 percent and cocaine possession arrests up 14 percent. The recovery rate for stolen property was 42 percent; for stolen motor vehicles the recovery rate was 75 percent. Tables
