This 2002 Maryland State Police Annual Report presents the accomplishments of the State Police during the fiscal year.
Abstract
The Annual Report is organized according to specific offices, with each office of the Maryland State Police receiving a description of its responsibilities and a summary of its accomplishments during 2002. Superintendent Edward T. Norris describes the central theme of the 2002 year for the Maryland State Police as a growing involvement with issues related to homeland security. Additionally, the Maryland State Police were called upon to deal with many unique circumstances, such as aiding communities following a destructive tornado in the spring and the Washington area snipers case. The Maryland State Police was a significant contributor to the sniper case, helping to capture the suspects at a rest stop in Maryland. Maryland State Police also aggressively enforced commercial motor carrier laws, removing 18,752 unsafe large trucks from the highways by operating all fixed weigh and inspection facilities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For the first time in the Annual Report the accomplishments of the Office of the State Fire Marshall are included, such as the fact that there has been a 20 percent decrease in fire fatalities over the past year. Charitable activities are described, such as the Polar Bear Plunge and the St. Mary’s Splash; and the opening of two new barracks and the construction of a third barrack are included. The report concludes with tables of summary statistics, pictures of Maryland State Police activities, and a flow chart of the organization of the Maryland State Police.
