Abstract
The information and statistics in this report were compiled from the monthly Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) submitted to the Police Information Network (PIN) by State law enforcement agencies. A total of 240,970 index crimes were reported to law enforcement agencies in the State during 1979, a 12.42 percent increase over 1978. There were 4,410 victims for every 100,000 permanent inhabitants of the State, an increase of nearly 10.5 percent over 1978. Reported violent crimes rose 8.14 percent to 24,608, including 587 murders (a 1.18-percent decrease), 1,122 rapes (a 11.53-percent increase), 18,622 aggravated assaults (an increase of 6.35 percent), and 4,277 robberies (a 17.31-percent increase), the largest single percentage increase for any index offense. Nonviolent (property) crimes increased 12.93 percent to a total of 216,362. These crimes included 71,562 burglaries (a 9.95 percent increase); 12,352 motor vehicle thefts (an 11.20 percent increase), and 1,426 arsons (reported during an average 10-month reporting period). Over 50 percent of the total number of index offenses were in the larceny category which reported 132,448 larcenies, an increase of 14.78 percent. A total of 61,799 index offenses (25.65 percent of all reported index crimes) were cleared by arrest or exceptional means in 1979. Tabular data, crime clocks, a recapitulation of offenses for 1975 through 1979, and a history of contributor participation are provided. (Author abstract modified)
