This report presents statistical tabular data reflecting criminal activity in Oklahoma during calendar year 1978; crime rates, arrest statistics, and some comparative data from previous years are included.
Abstract
Index crimes totaled 116,928 for 1978, constituting 4,060 offenses per 100,000. This represents an increase in the total number of Index crimes of .3 percent over those reported in 1977. Larceny-theft was the largest category of Index crime reported in the State; there were 60,233 larcenies reported, with a property loss of $15,033,835. The number of violent crimes increased 12.9 percent over those reported in 1977. Nonviolent crimes (breaking and entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft), reflect a .7-percent decrease over 1977. A total of 238 murders were reported for the year, representing a decrease of .8 percent. Six law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty. There was a 20.3-percent clearance rate for all Index crimes, 146,726 arrests for all offenses. Arrests of juveniles constituted 14.7 percent of all persons arrested in 1978. There were 8,858 reported arrests for drug abuse violations; alcohol-related arrests constituted 51.7 percent of the total arrests reported in 1978. A total of 296 law enforcement agencies contributed to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program during 1978. Employment data, tables, 26 graphs, and a glossary are provided. (Author abstract modified)
