Abstract
THIS VOLUME CONTAINS THE TEXTS OF TEN TRIALS DEALING WITH TREASON AND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS WHICH WERE CHOSEN FROM PROCEEDINGS WHICH DOCUMENT STATE PROSECUTIONS BETWEEN THE REIGNS OF HENRY VIII AND GEORGE III. EACH TRIAL IS INTRODUCED BY A SHORT ESSAY WHICH EXPLAINS THE EVENTS SURROUNDING THE TRIAL AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN RELATION TO LEGAL HISTORY. INCLUDED IN THIS FIRST VOLUME ARE THE TREASON PROCEEDINGS AGAINST SIR THOMAS MORE IN 1535 AND AGAINST QUEEN CATHERINE HOWARD IN 1542. A GENERAL INTRODUCTION EXPLAINS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF 'STATE TRIALS' AS A WHOLE.
