This document presents corrections statistics for the State of Washington for fiscal year 2002.
Abstract
The average daily population for prisons is calculated by adding the number of inmates’ days on in-residence, escorted leave, court order, and county jail, then dividing by the number of days in the month. The grand total of inmates was highest in the month of October with 15,363. The female inmate average daily population was highest in the month of October with 1,119. Seventy-one percent of inmates were white, 22 percent Black, and 12 percent Hispanic. Twenty percent of inmates were incarcerated for drug crime; 8 percent for murder one, and 8 percent for robbery. Most inmates were 30- to 34-years-old. The 25- to 29-year-old age group was the next highest in population with 35- to 39-year-olds following. A total of 3,894 inmates were released, with 3,391 male inmates and 503 female inmates. Most were released to community custody. The average length of stay was 22 months. Most inmates were in the moderate risk group. 35 tables, 2 charts
