This report presents the Texas strategy for coordinating efforts to control trafficking in illegal drugs and violent crime and to allocate resources, as required under the Federal Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988.
Abstract
The $6.8 million provided to Texas for fiscal year 1989 will be used to continue the Texas Narcotics Control Program, a drug law enforcement program developed in 1987 that emphasizes the use of multi-jurisdictional task forces to enhance drug control. Drug trafficking is a major problem throughout Texas. The main drugs used currently are crack cocaine, cocaine powder, methamphetamine and amphetamines, marijuana, heroin, and designer drugs. Law enforcement officials throughout the State are knowledgeable about the types of drugs available and the sources and methods of distribution. Their efforts are directed against both traffickers and users. Specific programs for fiscal year 1989 include multi-jurisdictional task forces, development of programs such as pretrial drug testing, and support for program innovations and evaluation.
