Statistical information on the confrontations between the Palestinian terrorists and the Israelis from 1969 to 1987 formed the basis of this analysis of the effectiveness of various strategies against terrorism and the relationship between a government's use of force and subsequent terrorism.
Abstract
The study used official records, university research, newspaper and radio reports, and other sources and divided the information into two databases. The first included 1,016 Palestinian attacks against Israeli targets in Israel and abroad. The second included 349 Israeli attacks against Palestinian targets. A third database combined information by calendar quarters. Results of univariate, regression, and correlation analyses showed that the number of Palestinian terrorists captured while carrying out a terrorist attack increased significantly over the period. The extent and intensity of Israeli attacks did not increase over time, but the extent of Palestinian attacks increased significantly over time. The Palestinian and Arab casualties in Palestinian attacks also increased significantly over time. Findings suggested that the police and anti-terrorist units in Israel and in Western countries are more successful over time in capturing terrorists and averting terrorist attacks.
