This statistical profile summarizes information about offender population levels in Kansas as well as commitment trends and characteristics of the offender population.
Abstract
Inmates confined in Kansas correctional facilities totaled 6,193 or 52.4 percent of the instate inmate and parole population as of June 30, 1992. The Kansas parole caseload numbered 5,621 or 47.6 percent of the population. The year-end inmate population increased by 10 percent in fiscal year 1992 compared to decreases of 1 percent and 8 percent during the previous two fiscal years. Total number of admissions increased by 275 (7.3 percent) from fiscal year 1991; the total number of releases dropped 367 (9.5 percent) from fiscal year 1991. Return admissions for violations of parole and conditional release have increased substantially in recent years. In regard to offender recidivism, most failures occur in the first 3 years postrelease. The inmate population was 94.7 percent male and 5.3 percent female as of June 30, 1992. Women in the inmate population totaled 328, up 36 percent from the 242 in 1991. 24 tables
