This Annual Statistical Report presents the available statistics of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services to the juvenile justice community.
Abstract
The report is intended as a reference book for capital planning, 3-year planning, and budget documents. The report contains two sections. Section one provides the intake profile. This section provides case-related information from referral to the court disposition stage. In fiscal year 1993 the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services' case managers managed 48,815 cases. These involved 33,984 juveniles. The intake process determines whether formal court intervention is necessary or if a youth can be served by informal supervision or by a process known as "closing" or "disapproving" the case at intake. A case is counted each time a youth is referred on a new charge during the year. Section two provides information on services to youth in nonresidential and residential programs. This section is divided into four subsections based on the Department's four core service-delivery systems. They are Prevention and Diversion, Community Supervision, Residential Services, and Structured Facility Residential Services. Each subsection contains a description of the services provided and statistical information on the number of cases or youth served, or both. In fiscal year 1993 the Department served 4,702 juveniles in residential care, including secure detention and structured shelter-care programs. 25 tables
