Abstract
A total of 2,694 mentally ill offenders were in hospitals at the end of 1997, an increase of 6 percent over the previous year. This rate of increase was similar to the yearly average in recent years. The number admitted under hospital orders declined from 243 in 1996 to 211 in 1997, while the number recalled to hospital increased from 74 to 100. The number transferred from prison to hospital was 745 in both 1996 and 1997. A total of 1,074 mentally disordered offenders were admitted to hospitals in 1997, compared to 1,079 in 1996. The number of restricted individuals who were released into the community increased from 321 in 1996 to 333 in 1997. The number of restricted individuals in high-security hospitals declined by less than 2 percent between 1996 and 1997, while those in other hospitals increased by 12 percent. Approximately 1,200 individuals have been in high-security hospitals each year over the last decade. Figures, tables, and footnotes
