This report details the numbers and types of seizures of controlled drugs and drug offenders in the United Kingdom during 1990.
Abstract
Seizures rose by 15 percent from the previous year to a total of 60,900. Marijuana was involved in 90 percent of the seizures in 1988 and 1989, and the number of LSD seizures almost doubled in 1990. The number of heroin and cocaine seizures declined, but record quantities were seized. Drug offenders increased by 15 percent to 44,900 with 90 percent involved in drug possession cases. Two-thirds of the increase involved offenders under age 21, and the average age of offenders declined to just under 25 years. The use of cautioning increased, and for the first time more people were cautioned than fined. Forty percent were cautioned, and 35 percent were fined. Less than 10 percent were sentenced to immediate custody. Figures, tables, and maps
