Some 100,700 offenses against prison discipline were punished in England and Wales during 1993, a 13 percent increase over 1992; the number of offenses punished per head of average population increased from 2 in 1992 to 2.3 in 1993, the highest recorded figure during the past decade.
Abstract
The category accounting for the most offenses against prison discipline involved unauthorized transactions, including possession of controlled drugs. Most common offenses were disobedience, disrespect, and other offenses largely against good prison order and discipline. When combined, common offenses accounted for 66 percent of all offenses in 1993. Violent offenses accounted for about 12 percent of all offenses, the same as in 1992. In 1993, as in previous years, the rate per 100 population of offenses punished was higher for females than for males. Frequently imposed punishments in both male and female establishments included additional days and stoppage or reduction of earnings. Nearly 24 percent of all punishments were suspended, including prospective punishments awarded to remand prisoners. 8 notes and 15 tables
