This report presents statistics for 1997 on the use of detention in Great Britain under the 1989 Prevention of Terrorism Act, as well as data on outcomes of the detentions.
Abstract
Thirty-one persons were detained in connection with Northern Irish terrorism in 1997, a decline from 82 persons in 1996. Twelve persons were detained in connection with international terrorism, an increase of 2 from 1996. No exclusion orders were in effect at the end of 1997. Twelve of the 43 persons detained in 1997 were charged with an offense. Extensions of detention were granted for nine persons. Seven hundred three persons were questioned for more than 1 hour but not detained. Twenty-eight of these individuals were charged with an offense.
