Great Britain's Prevention of Terrorism Act of 1989 gives the police power to arrest suspected terrorists and detain them for 48 hours on their own authority; this bulletin provides statistics on the use of police power under the act and on detention outcomes.
Abstract
A total of 61 people were detained in 1994 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, compared with 152 in 1993. All individuals except one were detained in connection with Northern Irish terrorism. Of those detained in 1994, 13 were charged with an offense or subjected to an exclusion order. The Metropolitan Police reported more detentions than any other police force. By the end of 1994, 58 exclusion orders had been issued, compared with 71 at the end of 1993. Among 48 persons detained and not charged with an offense or reported, removed, or excluded, no individual was held for more than 48 hours; 344 persons were examined for more than an hour but were not detained. Of the 344 individuals, 4 percent were charged with an offense. 11 notes and 10 tables
