Statistics on the operation of Great Britain's antiterrorism legislation for the first quarter of 1990 pertain to detentions, persons subject to an exclusion order or deportation order, persons charged with offenses following detention, extensions and periods of detention, and periods of examination.
Abstract
In the first quarter of 1990, 32 people were detained in Great Britain under the Prevention of Terrorism Act 1989. Thirty were associated with Northern Irish terrorism, and two were involved in international terrorism. During the most recent four quarters, eight exclusion orders were made against persons not previously excluded, continuing the low number of recent years. There are no powers under the act to exclude in connection with international terrorism; however, persons detained under the act may subsequently be deported, excluded, or removed under the Immigration Act 1971. In the latest four quarters, 15 of the 177 persons detained were charged with an offense. Over the same period, extensions beyond 48 hours were granted for 25 of the 177 persons detained, similar to the proportion in 1987-88. In the first quarter of 1990, 77 persons were examined for more than 1 hour but not detained, continuing the higher numbers of recent quarters. 10 notes, 7 tables.
