THE RESULTS OF AN INTERNATIONAL SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT IN 1977 CONCERNING WOMEN POLICE OFFICERS ARE SUMMARIZED.
Abstract
THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT SUBMITTED TO ALL NATIONAL CENTRAL BUREAUS A QUESTIONNAIRE SOLICITING FACTS ABOUT THE NUMBER AND PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN POLICE OFFICERS, THEIR TRAINING, THEIR DUTIES, THEIR EFFICIENCY, AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES; ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS PERTAINED TO CIVILIAN FEMALE POLICE EMPLOYEES. A SURVEY OF RECRUITMENT STANDARDS INDICATED THAT A FEW COUNTRIES USE DIFFERENT STANDARDS FOR WOMEN AND MEN, WHILE THE BASIC TRAINING FOR ALL POLICE OFFICERS IS NEARLY IDENTICAL. THE MOST FREQUENT POLICE WOMEN DUTIES IN THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES INCLUDE TRAFFIC REGULATION, DUTIES WITH WOMEN SUSPECTS, GENERAL CRIME INVESTIGATION, VICE AND SEXUAL OFFENSES, FOOT AND/OR VEHICULAR PATROLLING, SOCIAL WORK AND CHILD WELFARE, JUVENILE DELIQUENCY, CLERICAL WORK, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, PROSECUTION DUTIES, AND CHECKING FEMALE TRAVELERS. MOST RESPONDING AUTHORITIES STATED THEY HAD NO SPECIAL FEMALE UNITS OR DEPARTMENTS. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THREE COUNTRIES, ALL RESPONDENTS INDICATED THAT FEMALE OFFICERS ARE PROMOTED JUST AS THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS AND RECEIVE THE SAME SALARY. INFORMATION CONCERNING CIVILIAN FEMALE EMPLOYEES AND THEIR SALARY AND PROMOTIONS VARIED WIDELY FROM COUNTRY TO COUNTRY. NEARLY ALL REPLYING COUNTRIES STATED THAT POLICE WOMEN AND CIVILIAN WOMEN PERFORM AS WELL ON THE JOB AS MEN. INFORMATION CONCERNING ABSENTEEISM AND CAREER TRENDS AMONG WOMEN DOES NOT REVEAL AN OVERALL TREND. THE NUMBERS AND PERCENTAGES OF POLICEWOMEN IN THE 63 RESPONDING COUNTRIES ARE PRESENTED IN CHART FORM. THE QUESTIONNAIRE SUBMITTED TO THE COUNTRIES IS APPENDED. (SAJ)
