This article surveys research on the perception of delinquency in the population, community based crime prevention, juvenile delinquency prevention, drug prevention, and the prevention of recidivism in Australia and New Zealand.
Abstract
Attitude research indicates that Australians and New Zealanders are only moderately worried about their security as compared with other members of the international community. Nevertheless, the police departments of the two countries are introducing community-based crime prevention programs modeled after those in the United States and Europe. Several programs for the prevention of juvenile delinquency exist; however, of these only the Youth and Law Project (YALP) in New South Wales has been researched and evaluated. Both New Zealand and Australia have vigorously researched and combatted drug abuse through legislation and information campaigns. While the international community has spent much effort and research on the prevention of recidivism, Australia and New Zealand admit openly that they have failed to deal with their recidivism problems effectively. 41 references
