This handbook is designed as a general reference and resource for personnel working with troubled youth and to promote understanding of Hawaii's juvenile justice system and the processes associated with servicing status offenders.
Abstract
Juveniles who commit status offenses come to the attention of Hawaii's juvenile justice system usually when they are arrested by the police. Status offense referrals by agencies to family courts are primarily from the Department of Education for truancy or educational neglect. There are a few cases in which referrals are made by parents or other social service agencies. The handbook details Hawaii's juvenile justice system in terms of arrest, diversion, shelter, detention, court intake, informal adjustment, disposition, court procedures, counsel and release, and community service. The handbook lists State and private juvenile justice agencies as well as network service organizations. It gives information on hours of operation for each agency, location, telephone number, agency type, mission, programs, and intake procedures. A theoretical framework for juvenile delinquency prevention is outlined. An index identifies juvenile justice resources in alphabetical order and by service. 27 references
