Police officer recruits attend academies designed to instruct them in physical training, the use of firearms and other weapons, emergency vehicle operation, and defensive tactics.
Abstract
The area that has the greatest impact upon the officer's ability to survive a felonious assault during an arrest is defensive tactics. Most communities offer martial arts training, which is an ideal way for an officer to maintain his defensive tactics skills. Both hard arts and soft arts have aspects of physical and psychological training which are applicable to police work. Martial arts can help an officer learn to take control of dangerous situation and use force to overcome a violent assailant. Some of the techniques imparted through martial arts training include hand and foot strikes, grappling, principles of balance and leverage, and self- discipline.
