This article discusses the benefits of shared services and the process/steps in applying and receiving funding.
Abstract
This article looks at how all police administrators want to save taxpayers’ money while improving police services. The best way to do things is through shared services. Shared services are a way to save and improve current services. Shared services include sharing police, fire, dispatch, patrolling, criminal investigation, and training. Funding for shared services typically comes from the government in the form of a grant. There is stiff competition from other police departments so typically a consultant or the agencies grant writer is utilized. There are usually two grants sought: the first to fund the feasibility study and a second, more detailed grant to implement the shared services program. Eight steps that are usually required to institute a shared services program include: 1) determine the need; 2) approval for feasibility study; 3) apply for study grant; 4) feasibility study; 5) approval for next step; 6) application implementation grant; 7) implementation; and 8) evaluation. The article discusses the eight steps in greater detail.
