THIS SERIES OF ARTICLES EXAMINES PRISONS AND THE PRISON EXPERIENCE IN AMERICA'S SOUTH, WITH ATTENTION TO WHO GOES TO PRISON, LIFE BEHIND WALLS, THE RESURGENCE OF THE DEATH PENALTY, AND THE FUTURE OF INCARCERATION.
Abstract
IN ADDITION TO ARTICLES REVIEWING THE HISTORY OF IMPRISONMENT, THE INCARCERATIVE PROCESS, AND PRISON AND PRISONER STATISTICS, INTERVIEWS AND JOURNALISTIC CASE STUDIES PROVIDE A COLLECTIVE PICTURE OF THE CONDITIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF PRISON ROUTINE, INCLUDING LIFE ON A PRISON PLANTATION, IN INSTITUTIONS FOR MEN AND WOMEN, AND ON DEATH ROW. PROFILES ARE PRESENTED OF A WOMAN INMATE IN NORTH CAROLINA, THREE GENERATIONS OF ALABAMA PRISON GUARDS, AND TWO INMATES SENTENCED TO DIE, ONE IN FLORIDA AND THE OTHER IN ALABAMA. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE MOVEMENT TOWARD SCIENTIFIC PENOLOGY IN GEORGIA, PRISON PREACHERS, STATISTICS ON THE SCOPE OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN THE U.S., THE FIGHT AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY, PRISONER AND PUBLIC ATTITUDES CONCERNING THE UTILITY OF EXECUTIONS, EXPERT'S VIEWS ON THE FUTURE OF INCARCERATION, AND THE VIABILITY OF SELECTED ALTERNATIVES TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION, SPECIFICALLY, EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES TO PENOLOGY IN HOLLAND, ENGLAND, AND DENMARK.
