A project implemented in one community in The Netherlands in 1986-87 focused on vandalism prevention education among students in both elementary and secondary schools and has been so successful that in 1991 it will be carried out in 11 municipalities.
Abstract
The project resulted from awareness that vandalism had significantly increased in Emmen and from research indicating that most vandalism was committed by youths aged 12-18. The local government and police cooperated with the schools in developing the project. The government funded the project, which focused initially on students aged 10-14 and was then expanded, at the request of the teachers, to younger and older students. The project aims to make students realize that vandalism is unacceptable and that it has consequences for the offenders. The students, their parents, and members of the community all receive information on the subject. The long-term goal is to integrate the subject of vandalism prevention with the regular lessons.
