Community involvement is viewed as a key component of violent crime prevention in neighborhoods and schools, and suggestions are offered on how to settle disputes and reduce the risk of being a violent crime victim.
Abstract
Experts agree that violence is associated with gangs, racism, family and personal stress, lack of opportunities, alcohol and other drug abuse, easy access to weapons, and lack of support networks. Violence ruins individuals and communities and can be prevented if a community decides it will not tolerate violence and works closely with law enforcement. Community involvement includes educating others about self-protection, forming community action groups, strengthening troubled families, helping youth in crisis, improving job and educational opportunities, and preventing drug abuse. Specific steps that children, parents, and neighborhoods can take to curtail violence are listed. Examples of community efforts to stop violence are cited, as well as groups that can provide helpful materials on violence prevention.
