This collection of materials forms a prekindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum for preventing gun violence.
Abstract
This folder contains: (1) brochures about the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence and Handgun Control, Inc.; (2) leaflets about gun violence in the United States; and (3) descriptions of the STAR (Straight Talk About Risks) program for students from prekindergarten through Grade 12. Some of the information is also presented in Spanish. There is a leaflet on Gun Violence in Our Nation's Schools which discloses that a nationwide survey of high school students found that one in 20 students had carried a gun, usually a handgun, during a one-month period in 1990. Another survey of high school students conducted in 1987 reported that 48 percent of tenth-grade boys and 34 percent of eighth-grade boys said they could get a handgun if they wanted one. There are statistics on: (1) 1992 firearm deaths in the United States; (2) gun violence in the African-American community; (3) firearms and youth suicide; (4) children and guns; and (5) whether or not possession of a gun increases one's safety.
