OVERVIEW OF THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TO TERRORIST VIOLENCE IN NORTHERN IRELAND INCLUDING SKETCHES OF THE PERSPECTIVES OF THE MAJOR GROUPS INVOLVED IN THE CONFLICT.
Abstract
THE GROUPS DESCRIBED ARE THE BRITISH ARMY, THE PROVISIONAL IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY, THE OFFICIAL IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY AND THE PROTESTANT MILITANTS, THE ANALYSIS CONCLUDES THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS FEEL THAT THE VIOLENCE THEY CARRY OUT IS LEGITIMATE AND ALL ACT WITHIN A TRADITION THAT AUTHORIZES THEIR STRATEGIES AND LIMITS THEIR TACTICS.
