THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS IN TERMS OF THE POLICE ROLE AND ITS COMPLEXITIES AND EXPLORES A SERIES OF EXPLANATIONS FOR THE DECLINE OF THE POSITIVE IMAGE OF THE POLICE.
Abstract
THE ARTICLE ALSO DISCUSSES PROBLEMS OF RACIAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PREDOMINANTLY ALL WHITE POLICE AS THEY ENTER A MINORITY COMMUNITY. THE AUTHORS SEE THE POLICE OFFICER AS A VICTIM OF THE COMMUNITY HE SERVES, WHERE HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY IS FURTHER COMPLICATED BY THE NATURE OF THE SERVICE HE PROVIDES. THIS ARTICLE IS DERIVED FROM A STUDY OF THE ADMINISTRATION, BEHAVIOR, AND MEANING OF BEAT PATROLMEN IN ROCHESTER (NY).
