Abstract
In December 2010, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution based on recommendations from the U.N. Economic and Social Council's Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to "Strengthen crime prevention and criminal justice responses to violence against women." Member states were asked to incorporate the resolution into their efforts to investigate, prosecute with due process, and punish all perpetrators of violence against women. In addition, the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was tasked with promoting the empowerment of women and gender equality in order to enhance efforts to eliminate violence against women. This report presents an analysis of member states' responses to this resolution. The responses are covered under nine areas: criminal law; criminal procedure; police, prosecutors, and other criminal justice officials; sentencing and corrections; victim support and assistance, health, and social services; training; research and evaluation; crime prevention measures; and international cooperation. The report also contains a discussion of UNODC's activities to prevent and respond to violence against women.
