Abstract
Information on the nature of stress and on stress in policing opens the text. The authors discuss how to recognize stress reactions and examine organizational and supervisory strategies for stress management, including techniques that minimize pressure and improve performance. Techniques and cognitive strategies for individual stress management, such as physical fitness, relaxation, time and money management, and changing beliefs that are stressful and irrational are described. The concluding chapter details a comprehensive training program, which might include an executive seminar for command level personnel, courses for first-line supervisors, courses for officers in assignments that have been found to be particularly stressful, inservice courses for patrol officers, a section on stress in recruit training, courses for police spouses, and preemployment courses for prospective officers. Chapter notes, tables, subject and name indexes, and about 280 references are provided. (Publisher abstract modified)
