THE MODEL WOULD INVOLVE PROGRAMS AIMED AT THE ORIGIN OF ORGANIZATIONAL TENSION TO REDUCE STRESS AND IMMUNIZE THE OFFICER AGAINST IT AS WELL AS TREATMENT FOR JOB-SPECIFIC PROBLEMS AS THEY MANIFEST THEMSELVES.
Abstract
THIS REPORT PROVIDES A GENERAL ORIENTATION TOWARD THE KINDS OF JOB STRESS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON POLICE OFFICER AS THEY DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO COMPENSATE FOR AN ENVIRONMENT PERCEIVED AS INCONSISTENT AND FOR TRAINING THAT HAS NEGLECTED ITS RESPONSIBILITY. THE MODEL IS IN FOUR STAGES. THE FIRST TWO CAN BE CONSIDERED AS PROACTIVE IN THAT THEY DELIBERATELY ATTEMPT TO REDUCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SYMPTOMS. THESE ARE A PRE-SERVICE ASSESSMENT FOR VULNERABILITY TO POTENTIAL STRESSORS AND JOB RELEVANT TRAINING FOR NECESSARY BEHAVIORAL SKILLS AND IMMUNIZATION AGAINST STRESS. THE NEXT TWO STAGES ARE REACTIVE BECAUSE THEY ARE DESIGNED TO DEAL WITH INDIVIDUALS FOLLOWING MANIFESTATIONS OF STRESS SYMPTOMS. THESE ARE THE EARLY RECOGNITION OF SYMPTOMS AND INTERNAL AFFAIRS' ACTIVITIES.
