Correctional personnel experience an unusually high level of stress, both in their work and in their personal lives, and the success of correctional professionals is often determined by how they manage stress.
Abstract
Correctional personnel, including juvenile counselors, probation and parole officers, jail officers, correctional educators, and prison wardens, need to learn how to live and work with stress. They should be aware of recent findings about stress and health, identify stressors in the work environment, learn how to prevent burnout, acquire time management skills, rely on supervisors to help manage stress, determine how offender manipulation can cause stress, and learn stress management techniques both on and off the job. The book covers stress and burnout in detail, along with coping behavior, communicating without stress, managing employees under stress, and learning how to manage time and relax. Appendixes contain additional information on the importance of diet, exercise, and relaxation in stress prevention. References, charts, and photographs
