For several years, the Department of Public Safety at Buffalo State College (New York State) has included Public Safety Aides (PSAs), college students who work in concert with Public Safety officers and other law enforcement personnel associated with the Department of Public Safety.
Abstract
The PSA Program originated several years ago with a few students who were required to do night patrol around the campus and in the residence halls. Their responsibilities were to patrol, observe, and report. Over the years as the College grew in size, population, and diversity, expectations for the program also increased. Consequently, PSAs were soon providing escorts for those who requested them, as well as monitoring the library and campus art center. Today, the PSAs still perform their original duties and a wide variety of other services for the College community: monitoring traffic, monitoring and regulating parking and parking lots, providing parking permits at registration, monitoring social events, monitoring sporting events, and providing special coverage for events that arise unexpectedly. PSAs are part-time State employees paid by New York State. There are approximately 60 students enrolled in the organization, which is divided into 10 teams, with a student leader for each team. This article describes the process for selecting PSAs and discusses issues in the management of PSAs.
