Attitudinal change among probationers participating in a community-based correctional program, or boot camp, was studied.
Abstract
The Courts Regimented Intensive Probation Program (CRIPP), administered by the Harris County (Houston, TX) Community Supervision Corrections Department, provides probationers with various medical, vocational, physical training, social, and counseling services. From September 1, 1992 to March 1, 1993, 389 CRIPP participants completed both incoming and outgoing surveys. Attitudes were assessed in regard to eight domains. Data suggest that probationer attitudes improved significantly as a result of the program. Positive changes were found in every domain except AIDS counseling, presumably due to the fact that most probationers did not use the service enough to have formed a definite opinion. Probationers perceived more opportunities for the future, had improved family relations, viewed the CRIPP program more favorably, and saw themselves as having greater self-control. 8 tables, 1 endnote, and 22 references
