The report presents designs for improving the security of present day ratchet and pawl metallic handcuffs.
Abstract
Two methods using a new lock feature were developed that significantly improve the lock, and the National Bureau of Standards has applied for a patent on these innovations. In addition, several other potential handcuff improvements are discussed. They include using a single chain instead of the present two or more (a proper-sized single chain would preclude interlocking the handcuff swivels), adding a back edge chamber to and reducing the slope of the last ratchet tooth, and adding coined 'match-up' marks to the ratchets and housings. Drawings and photographs are supplied.
