The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis X-ray system (EDAX) were used to perform qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of residues found on wounds under experimental conditions.
Abstract
Using fresh pig's head, 700 samples of three morphologies of wound, including samples through polyester-cotton cloth, were caused by simulated lethal blows from iron, wood, brick, and stone objects. The methods of examination by SEM and EDAX, collection of evidence, and analysis of wound characteristics are discussed. In addition, conclusions from several homicide cases in which these methods were used are reviewed. 9 figures, 3 tables, 2 references. (Author abstract modified)
