Research that focused on five aspects of document security focused on how security techniques could be combined to develop a classified document protection system.

Abstract

Preliminary studies concluded that no single technique can provide adequate protection of classified documents. Thus, the problem was broken into smaller parts to examine a systematic approach that would use several components to increase document protection. These components would limit the unauthorized access to classified documents, increase the protection of documents during transfers between accountability stations, protect documents against unauthorized reproduction, protect documents against unauthorized removal from a secured area, and verify that documents marked for destruction are actually physically destroyed. Options considered included using bar codes, a computer-based paperless system, repository access control, compartmentalization of the secured area, using tamper-evident packages, providing paper tagging, producing non-copyable documents, and placing magnetic or chemical tags in document covers. Using these techniques would improve security, although it is impossible to protect documents completely. Tables and 12 references. (Author abstract modified)
