THE FINAL REPORT OF A STUDY CONDUCTED AT THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA JAIL DURING AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER OF 1969 TO DETERMINE THE PARAMETERS OF HEROIN USE.
Abstract
INTERVIEWS WERE COMPLETED ON A SAMPLE OF 225 RESIDENTS OF THE DC JAIL AND URINE SAMPLES FROM 129 OF THOSE INTERVIEWED WERE ANALIZED. COMPARISONS ON AGE, RACE, NUMBER OF PRIOR COMMITMENTS, AND CURRENT OFFENSE, INDICATED THE RESIDENT SAMPLE WAS CHARACTERISTIC OF THE D.C. JAIL POPULATION. FORTY FIVE PERCENT OF THE SAMPLE POPULATION WERE IDENTIFIED AS ADDICTED TO HEROIN AND TWENTY TWO PERCENT OF THE NON-ADDICTS STATED THEY HAD USED DRUGS SOMETIME IN THE PAST. THE GREAT MAJORITY OF THE SELF-REPORTED ADDICTS HAVE USED COCAINE, USUALLY TRYING IT AFTER THEY HAD REACHED TWENTY YEARS OF AGE. ADDITIONAL STATISTICS ARE GIVEN FOR USAGE OF MARIJUANA, BARBITURATES, METHADONE, AND AMPHETAMINES. A PATTERN OF THE PERSONAL AND SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS IS DRAWN FROM THE DATA INCLUDING TYPE OF OFFENSE, AGE, EDUCATION, MARITAL STATUS, AND PERSONAL INCOME.
