Survey questionnaires were completed by probation and parole workers in the Middle Atlantic States (Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont) regarding hazardous incidents and victimizations they experienced while carrying out their employment responsibilities. The responses were analyzed on a state-by-state basis.
Abstract
The purpose of this research, which expanded upon previous studies, was to initiate development of a comprehensive database describing the victimization of probation and parole workers in the region. The 10 research questions incorporated into the survey covered the extent of victimization, the variation of kinds and rates of victimization according to specific roles and characteristics of workers, characteristics of victimizers, the contexts in which victimization occurred, ways in which workers coped with the victimization and its aftermath, how worker victimization could be prevented, and which proposed policy initiatives were supported by the workers. 293 tables
