STUDY WHICH ASSESSES THE INFLUENCE OF RACIAL IDENTITY ON THE OCCURRENCE OF CONFLICTS IN THE OFFICIAL BEHAVIOR OF NEGRO POLICEMEN.
Abstract
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BEING NEGRO AND THE CARRYING OUT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT DUTIES IN SO FAR AS THIS RELATIONSHIP MAY PRODUCE UNCERTAINTIES IN THE POLICEMEN'S CONDUCT IS ANALYZED. THE STUDY DEALT WITH NEGRO AND WHITE POLICEMEN IN A MIDWESTERN URBAN POLICE FORCE. TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF RACIAL BACKGROUND IN RELATION TO OTHER FACTORS COMPARISONS WERE MADE BETWEEN SAMPLES OF NEGRO AND WHITE POLICEMEN IN TERMS OF SUCH SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS AS DUTY ASSIGNMENT, EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, AND RANK ON THE POLICE FORCE. METHODS EMPLOYED IN GATHERING DATA AN THE TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO ITS ANALYSIS ARE DISCUSSED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED IN THE STUDY ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
